Indian Government launches Responsible Business Guidelines

The Indian Ministry of Corporate Affairs launched the National Voluntary Guidelines on Social, Environmental & Economic Responsibilities of Business on 8 July 2011. The Guidelines provide a basic framework that may be adopted voluntarily by companies to address interests of various stakeholders, including employees, customers and investors. GRI’s Focal Point India has been closely involved in the creation of the Guidelines. Dr. Aditi Haldar, Director of Focal Point India, welcomed the announcement: “India’s government has been ahead of the game in encouraging sustainable, responsible business practices for a long time. The new Guidelines build on those first issued in 2009, and demonstrate the government’s continued commitment to sustainable business.”
This month India also hosted the Global Summit on Corporate Social Responsibility and Transparency in New Delhi. The Summit, held on 8 and 9 July, was organized by the Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), in collaboration with GRI and the Economic Times. Dr. Aditi Haldar and Marjolein Baghuis, Director Communications and Network Relations, GRI, spoke at the event.
Baghuis chaired the first session on connecting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Transparency. Panelists highlighted the importance of stakeholder engagement, and the role of financial markets, competitiveness and risk management. The main outcome of the session was a consensus that connecting CSR and transparency fosters mutual trust among stakeholders and is a positive outcome of connecting the two.
On the final day of the summit, Haldar was a panelist in the accountability and disclosure session, which was chaired by Mr. Viraf Mehta, Regional Advisor, Institute of Human Rights and Business. Panelists discussed the primary drivers of accountability and disclosure, sustainability reporting and the challenges many corporations face. Haldar said: “Sustainability reporting is moving from the margins to the mainstream. Sustainability is no longer about what we must, but about what we can be. Open transparent business is the only way for India to move from an emerging market to a developed country.”
With the publication of the Guidelines and events such as those held in New Delhi, India is showing leadership in responsible, sustainable business.
